2010 Flu Vaccine Update:
How is the 2010 Fall Flu Vaccine Different from Last Year’s Seasonal and H1N1 Vaccines?
The flu shot has always been a combination vaccine, protecting us from the three most common strains of the flu. Last year, H1N1 was identified after the seasonal flu vaccine had already been manufactured; so the H1N1 vaccine was produced as a separate vaccine. This year the seasonal flu combination shot contains protection against the most common virus strains, including H1N1.
The flu vaccine is a safe vaccine. The risk of severe illness or death from the flu is much higher than the risk of any side effect from the vaccine. We expect to begin giving out the flu vaccine beginning the week of September 20th.
